All the drama and memes have died off after Cyberpunk's disastrous 2020 launch, the dust has finally settled, and fans can now look toward the franchise's future. Well, as long as they don't look too far ahead, because, for better or worse, the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC is the last stop for CD PROJEKT RED's game. The devs confirmed they're switching from their now-defunct in-house REDengine to Unreal Engine 5.
Phantom Liberty, the DLC starring Idris Elba, is arriving on September 26, but Update 2.0 is coming almost one week earlier, on September 21.

This bodes excellent news for fans because this final free content update overhauls a lot of gameplay mechanics and structures, along with the character progression system and skill trees.

The best part is that it doesn't require you to have the $30 Phantom Liberty DLC as long as you have the base game. CD PROJEKT RED went so far as to advise players to start the game from scratch because the gameplay experience will feel brand new.

Now for the good and bad news. The good news is that both Update 2.0 and Phantom Liberty are coming out on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, but the bad news is that if you're still on the almost-defunct PS4 and Xbox One, you're out of luck.

But if you're among the lucky ones, here's what's coming your way. The skill trees, perks, cyberware goodies, and whatnot have significantly changed. In fact, no matter if you finished the game before, it's still going to feel new in many core aspects.

This further proves that Cyberpunk 2077 was a major rush job, and the devs didn't have enough time to think things through during the initial development cycle. It took CD PROJEKT RED another three years after the 2020 launch to get to this point.

Another awesome thing implemented is the never-seen-before vehicle combat system, where you can mount guns on your car just like John Doe in Twisted Metal and wreak havoc on the streets of Night City. Also, if you're being chased and prefer a more... hands-on approach, you can always pull a 180, pull your sawed-off shotgun out the window, and start blasting them to kingdom come.

Enemy and police AI have finally been improved after all this time. I couldn't enjoy my time with the gameplay side because I felt it was imbalanced. After I got my hands on a couple of "forearm whips," as I call them, no one could stop me, and the experience became boring. Hopefully, this will all change.

The UI or User Interface has also undergone some tweaks here and there, making the interaction with the game more straightforward.

The most exciting in-game revolution has to be the RNG, or random number generator, that gives you loot or items. Apparently, together with the crafting system, this will also blow our minds.

Remember, come Thursday, September 21, Update 2.0 is live and entirely free.
