Mallys Says Podiums Are Possible for Force India in 2010

Force India's good start of the season this year has turned Indian billionaire Vijay Mallya into an over-optimistic team owner, as the Silverstone based outfit emerged as the 5th best team of the grid after the season opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Italian Vitantonio Liuzzi finished the race in the 9th spot, bringing home Force India's first 2 points in 2010.

Reviewing what went on during the Sakhir race, Mallya admitted that fighting the Top 4 teams for the first 8 spots cannot be the case this season, but the simple fact that his drivers seem to have the pace for scoring points race in and race out is encouraging to say the least.

You've got to be amongst the top 10 to score points to begin with. With the big four - McLaren, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull - for me to say that we will run ahead of them sounds ambitious. But to be knocking on their doors and ahead of the rest is something I can be very pleased about,” said Mallya.

Additionally, the Indian businessman couldn't hide his optimism for the ongoing season, admitting that scoring a podium or two in the remaining 18 rounds on schedule should be achievable by either Liuzzi or his teammate Adrian Sutil. And this should only be the beginning, as he aims to become one of the big teams in the 2011 campaign (when F1 will hopefully travel to India for its first GP in the country).

In 2009 I said we should score some points occasionally, and we scored 13, which was respectable. This year I said we should score points regularly. We have opened our account in the first race and I think the opportunity is wide open for us to now score points regularly,” added Mallya.

I wouldn't be surprised if we could target the odd podium or two. And next year we should hopefully strongly target podium finishes.”
