Lotus Branding Dispute to Hit High Court

Time seems to be running out for an amicable agreement between Team Lotus and Lotus Group. Despite the recent comments made by Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar, who suggested that the matter might be resolved before the rebranding conflict hits the court room, it seems that the two parties have no chance of coming to an agreement in due time.

And that's because court hearings are scheduled to commence next week at London's High Court, with both Team Lotus and Lotus Group – who have purchased part of the former Renault F1 outfit and rebranded it into Lotus Renault GP – having appointed lawyers.

So while the majority of the F1 teams are focused on launching their cars for the upcoming season next week, Team Lotus will be caught up in the branding debacle at the High Court. The first episode – from a legal standpoint – will kick off next Monday, when Group Lotus' will apply for a summary judgement (a ruling that would not require a subsequent trial).

As far as Bahar's comments go, it seems that the Lotus official has talked to the wrong people lately, as Team Lotus' Chief executive Riad Asmat insisted no amicable solution has been forwarded by either of the two parties.

We haven't heard anything from them – we haven't talked to them recently,” he told the BBC, while insisting that his organization will not change its name for 2011.

We know we are Team Lotus, so it's really not an issue for us. It (the dispute) is what it is. We have a five-year plan. It's unfortunate they (Group Lotus) decided to go their own way for reasons which to me are trivial.
