Lorenzo Injures Hand, Misses Sepang Test

Racing is dangerous and exposes the rider to the risk of injury, and Jorge Lorenzo find that out on his own again yesterday. The 22-year-old Spaniard fractured his right hand in an accident while training in Barcelona and was immediately taken to hospital for treatment.

Lorenzo underwent surgery to fix the problem and had a titanium plate fitted in his hand to do so. Today, the Fiat Yamaha Team rider left the hospital in the morning and returned to his home in Barcelona to recuperate.

“The 22-year-old was riding his motocross bike at the practice course near Montmelo during a routine training session as part of his pre-season preparation. He fell in a slow corner, doing approximately 30km/h, and hurt his right hand as he landed,” a Yamaha statement reads.

“He was taken immediately to the Capio Hospital General de Catalunya and found to have a fracture at the base of the first metacarpal and a displaced thumb. Dr. Augusto J. Casanovas made an open reduction and osteosynthesis with a small titanium plate. Lorenzo will require hand protection for four to six weeks.”

Lorenzo will miss the next test at Sepang at the end of the month, but is expected to make a full recovery in time for the following test prior to the MotoGP season opener at Qatar in March.
