Alongside the awe-inspiring Project One hypercar, the three-pointed star is proud to present the smart vision EQ fortwo at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. A cutesy little thing with futuristic design, the concept is electric, autonomous, and doesn’t feature a steering wheel. Heck, the car doesn’t even have pedals!
There’s still a long way to go until legislation allows automakers to sell self-driving vehicles without conventional controls. But for all that, Daimler AG appears to be looking forward to this future we now imagine as some sort of sci-fi frontier. The byword for the smart vision EQ fortwo concept is CASE.

The four-letter word stands for connected, autonomous, shared and services, and electric. Described as the “the most radical car sharing concept car of all,” the vision EQ fortwo makes use of a lithium-ion battery with 30 kWh capacity. 2,699 millimeters long, 1,720 millimeters wide, and 1,535 millimeters tall, the two-seat concept can drive itself to the nearest charging station.

Look closer at the live photos, and you’ll notice that the Black Panel Grille and LED displays replace the headlamps and taillights. Then there are the side windows, which are covered in some sort of film onto which the vehicle can project information. The interior of the vision EQ fortwo is dominated by the huge Black Panel Display, which is designed with interface activities in mind.

"The smart vision EQ fortwo embodies the urban luxury of the future. It is a radical approach with a cool and minimalist design,” explains Gorden Wagener, the chief design officer of the Daimler AG mothership. “A multiplicity of digital surfaces inside and outside allows the next level of communication between human and automobile. The customer is able to personalize the vehicle according to their individual needs,” he added.

Instead of waiting for smart to adapt these features for mass production, it would be best to look forward to what Mercedes-Benz has in the pipeline for the nearest of futures. By 2022, the three-pointed star promised to launch more than ten electric vehicles, ranging from a smart-branded offering to a large sport utility vehicle from Mercedes-Benz.
