Lincoln to Drop MK-Based Naming Structure Once the Continental Enters Production

The Lincoln Continental might be more important than you thought. We liked what we saw both in New York and in Shanghai, hiding under the ‘Concept’ nomenclature, but the new full-size sedan will apparently bring about more changes that go deeper than just its image.
In an interview with Automotive News, Joe Hinrichs, Ford Motor Co’s president of the Americas, hinted at a possible drop of the current MK naming scheme in favor of old school names. That’s because the Continental simply couldn’t get a different name, if you ask us.

Sure, the MKS, MKX and MKZ they could keep their names intact, nobody cares all that much but for the icon that is the Continental, we couldn’t imagine a different name.

The reason invoked by the official is that for anyone that isn’t accustomed to the Lincoln products remembering the differences between various MK models could be tricky. You don’t say!

If you ask us, it’s not only that the new names are hard to distinguish and associate with a certain car but also that there’s a history behind the old ones. When you say Lincoln Town Car, you immediately know what we’re talking about. The same goes for the Navigator and, of course, the Continental.

That’s the direction Joe Hinrichs points to in the interview:

“Without divulging the future . . . We’re very excited about the Continental name and the attention it’s gotten. Another way Lincoln could distinguish itself is to leverage its heritage. So I’ll leave it at that.”

Yes, you should definitely do that but, for the moment, Lincoln officials are keeping their mouths sealed about such a change. When reached out to, they refused to confirm such a move could happen.

However, they did say that the company is leaving a door open regarding the future of their products. It might not seem like much but in PR talk that’s as close to a confirmation as it gets.
