The car maker will kick off the build of the 400 hectare (1.54 square miles) expansion to the existing plant later this year, planning to make the new site one dedicated to the assembly of the fifth model in the Porsche lineup, complete with body assembly line and paint shop. The auto maker will also hire 1,000 people in Leipzig and an undisclosed number at the sites that will support the production, Zuffenhausen and Weissach.
“During the production of the Cayenne and the Panamera, our Leipzig plant has impressively proved that it can produce premium vehicles of highest quality,” said Matthias Muller, Porsche chairman of the board.
“The decision in favour of this location is proof of our trust in the skills and qualifications of our Leipzig associates, and at the same time another contribution to the economic advancement of the region.”
The details surrounding the new Porsche SUV are still scarce (the industry rumor mill, try as it might, was unable to come up with anything on the model just yet, probably because the Cajun is still some three years away), with the only official word coming from the car maker being that the Cajun will become the new entry-level model in the lineup, aimed at attracting younger buyers to the brand.
