Land Rover has announced the introduction of its first-ever hybrid powertrain for the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models.
Developed to deliver an “outstanding fuel economy” of 44.1 miles per gallon combined (UK) and 26 percent lower CO2 emissions when compared to the gasoline versions, the new hybrid models will go on sale starting September 10, with deliveries scheduled to commence in early 2014.
Both the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport hybrids are motivated by the company’s popular 3.0-liter SDV6 diesel engine mated to a 35kW electric motor and an eights-speed ZF transmission. The whole system is said to deliver 340 HP at 4,000 rpm and 700 Nm of torque, which takes it into diesel V8 territory.
The Range Rover Hybrid can reach 62 mph (100 km/h) from a standing start in 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 135 mph (218 km/h), while the Range Rover Sport Hybrid, which is 22 kg (48.5 lbs) lighter, is 0.2 seconds faster to the 62 mph mark and tops 140 mph (225 km/h).
