Land Rover Adding Two Luxury Diesels at 2015 NAIAS

The gas prices might be low now, but Land Rover is one step ahead and prepares for their ascension by adding two diesel Range Rovers in North America, which deliver 32 percent increased combined fuel economy compared to the supercharged V6 version.
The 2016 model year Range Rover Td6 and Range Rover Sport Td6 just made their appearance at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, following to go on sale this fall, each boasting a 28-mpg highway fuel economy.

We’re talking about the 3-litter turbocharged V6 diesel here, delivering 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,750 rpm, compared to the gasoline V6’s 332 lb-ft from 3,500 rpm.

This means, the two Range Rover models will deliver similar acceleration times comparable to the higher horsepower V6 models. The Range Rover Sport Td6 reaches 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, just 0.2 seconds slower, while the standard Td6 is 0.3 seconds slower than the 7.1-sec gasoline V6. And yes, the low torque makes the two perfect for towing jobs.

New tech

The Td6 units provide efficiency and refinement thanks to a Compact Graphite Iron (CGI) block, which has a higher tensile strength than standard grey cast iron, better fatigue strength than aluminum and is also lighter.

Next comes the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system using Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to reduce NOx emissions by turning them into harmless nitrogen gas.

A Low Pressure EGR system is also on the menu, which recirculates gases absorbed after the DPF filter in the exhaust pipe, unlike traditional High Pressure EGR systems feeding from gases directly from the exhaust manifold.

The injection cycle also employs an innovative two-stage process to get rid of the diesel rattling and a new two-stage oil pump has been adopted to reduce engine losses.

Land Rover said all the tech presented here has been and it’s still being tested extensively in the US to ensure it meets the expectations of possible clients. By the time these new units will be on sale, the test fleet will have completed one million test miles.
