What’s a Porsche Taycan to a man who just signed the biggest contract in the history of North American sports? It’s nothing. It’s like you and me buying a new keyboard for a PC, or a new replica jersey to support our favorite team. Ohtani’s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers is worth a staggering $700 million over 10 years.
To be fair, the contract was structured in a pretty weird way. Ohtani is to earn just $2 million per year, with $68 million deferred each season until the conclusion of the deal – so basically to be paid yearly from 2034 to 2043. Until then, he’ll be making just $20 million over 10 years, before receiving the other $680 million.

He’ll be alright though, since he’s also got plenty of sponsorship deals with the likes of New Balance, Fanatics, plus loads of companies from Japan. He’s not lacking in endorsements.

Anyway, the Dodgers’ $700 million man decided to reward the person who gave up his jersey number so that Ohtani could retain no. 17, which he also wore during his tenure with the LA Angels. The man he rewarded was pitcher Joe Kelly, his new teammate – but specifically, he rewarded Kelly’s wife, Ashley, for her efforts during the so-called 'Ohtake17' campaign.

The Kelly couple played supporting roles in convincing Ohtani to sign with the Dodgers, with Joe being more than willing to give up his number if it meant getting Ohtani to switch sides and join the Angels’ in-town rivals.

That being said, Ashley Kelly is now the proud owner of a brand-new Porsche Taycan, courtesy of Ohtani’s generosity. It’s hard to be sure about the spec – whether it’s the entry-level Taycan, or the GTS, or maybe the Turbo or Turbo S. What we can tell you is that the exterior color appears to be Frozenblue Metallic, while the wheels appear to feature 21-inch satin black RS Spyder Design rims. It’s a good-looking spec, for sure.

Let’s just say that if the Kellys and Ohtani weren’t good enough friends already, this Taycan definitely sealed the deal. According to abc7, Ohtani and Joe Kelly were already spotted in public dining together, with the latter announcing that he would wear no. 99 going forward, since #17 now belongs to the best player in baseball – his status as no.1 is pretty much undebatable.

It will be fascinating to see whether Ohtani can lead the Dodgers to a World Series title, especially after he may have also played a role in recruiting another Japanese superstar to come to LA in Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

According to various power rankings, the Dodgers are now favorite to win the World Series next year, followed by the Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, Houston Astros and the 2023 champs, your Texas Rangers – in that order.

Personally, I think the Orioles and the Yankees also look pretty great on paper, and that whenever superteams get assembled in any of the four major U.S. sports, things rarely ever go as planned.
