The latest project developed by Dutch architecture company Waterstudio in collaboration with floating developments company Dutch Docklands is a floating 5-star hotel near Tromso, Norway. Located within the optimal Aurora Borealis (or Northern Lights) viewing zone, the Krystal hotel will feature a glass roof so guests can enjoy one of nature’s finest spectacles.
The design is based on an ice crystal which blends-in naturally with the “winter environment” between the most beautiful fjords. With a diameter of 120 meter (390 feet), the luxury hotel will have 86 rooms, conference rooms, spa & wellness facilities and was designed to be completely self supporting and self-sustainable. Its shape and size will offer some degree of stability on the water, but a stabilizing system of dampers, springs, and cables will also be used to offer guests the feeling of standing on dry land.
According to Gizmag, Waterstudio founder and architect Koen Olthuis said that an environmental study will be carried out before a final decision is made on any sustainable technology to be used in the build, but that some level of solar power will definitely be utilized in a bid to make the hotel as self-sufficient as possible. Using prefabricated sections hold in dry docks, construction of the hotel is expected to start in mid-2015 and those behind the project hope to finish the hotel by December 2016.
