Kawasaki Developing Artificial Intelligence Enhanced Motorcycles

Remember those flying creatures in Avatar that were able to communicate and understand the rider through that alien version of the USB port? Guess what Kawasaki is working on now? If you said intelligent motorcycles able to comprehend the needs and riding style of its rider, you’re right. Here’s a cookie!
Seriously, Kawasaki is in the early stages of developing a learning, talking artificial intelligence for its motorcycles in the future. And it’s being helped by Cocoro SB of the Softbank Group, who’s responsible for Pepper, the humanoid robot companion that is already able to detect your emotions and act accordingly.

However, instead of giving you a napkin when you’re about to cry from seeing the future gasoline prices, Kawasaki’s AI will most likely be some sort of on-board Siri/Cortana. It will start learning your preferences, usual routes, riding style, traffic patterns and probably tweak the suspension, braking power and engine mapping in real time while talking to the rider.

This means that a strong bond will start to create between the bike and the rider from day one, starting to trust each other and give female partners another reason to be jealous on motorcycles.

It reminds of the Toyota FV2 concept, which was some sort of trike gifted with the same capabilities plus displays all over the place that changed their graphics according to the rider’s mood.

Sounds pretty cool but sad at the same time. Motorcycles are currently the only machines left to go around that aren’t over encumbered by complex electronics. At least some of them. But it looks like the era of giving all things a mind of their own is slowly starting to engulf the motorcycle industry too.

Plus, this sounds like yet another company wanting to enter your intimacy and know what you are doing. I’m pretty sure that AI will need an Internet connection to work, which will most likely send reports about your riding style and habits.
