Here at autoevolution, we’re not what you might call the biggest fans of personalized license plates. However, selling license plates is a huge business in places like the UAE and the UK.
Earlier this year, a man called Arif Ahmad AL Zarouni had paid the equivalent of $4.9 million to acquire a license plate with “1” written on it. Is that as mad as this business can get? Far from it, I’m afraid, as proven by Afzal Kahn.
Afzal is the founder of the Kahn group of companies, as well as the creator of the Aston Martin DB9-based WB12 Vengeance. Mr. Kahn also happens to love personalized plates. The “F1” license plate, for example, was once listed for £10 million. Even though Mr. Kahn told us two years ago that the plate was, in fact, not for sale, it now shows up with a big fat “£POA” written under it.
For what it’s worth, it is very likely that “F1” is worth more than £10 million nowadays. Converted to U.S. dollars at the current exchange rates, that’ll be in excess of $13,133,400. That is too much money for mere mortals like you and me, though. In the more attainable part of the spectrum, Kahn Design has a plate which reads WED 11N (pictured). It’s £10,000 (plus VAT and fees).
WED 111N, however, is £8,333. Other notable license plates listed for sale by Kahn Design include 1 CEO (£375,000), 00 77 (£25,000), 4 K (£450,000), 180 (£POA), AK 6 or AK 7 (£150,000), WB12 AML (£POA), 1964 DB (£35,000), ROV 3R (£25,000), 918 RS (£POA), F328 GTB (£20,000), ERO 71C (£POA), HE11 WAR (£20,000), EAR 77H (£2,999), and K4 AHN (£250,000).
Surprisingly, BAR 157A is just £25,000. The problem with that price, however, is that a Starbucks barista in London earns approximately £17,600 per year.
Later edit: Kahn Design got in touch, adding that the "F1" number plate is not for sale. Yet it is. Should someone offer a princely sum, "Mr. Kahn may be willing to sell." In addition to this amendment, BAR 157A also happens to be an interesting propositions for barristers, the type of lawyer in common law jurisdictions. The British company had a bid thus far on the said number plate.
