We have seen so many movies about the end of the world that we have come to believe that the apocalypse, whenever it comes, it will be staged in Hollywood. In Netflix’s ‘Leave the World Behind,’ Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke are facing a cyberattack. At one moment, their own car is attacked by Teslas.
‘Leave the World Behind’ is the apocalyptic thriller that brings into the spotlight the story of a family of four. Based on Rumen Alam’s 2020 novel, the action intensifies as the four of them have to go through moments of panic caused by a global attack.

Julia Roberts plays Amanda Sanford, while Ethan Hawke is Clay Sanford. The two of them pack their bags and leave home to spend several days in an Airbnb in Long Island, away from the buzz of everyday life. But unexpectedly, the owners of the house, G.H Scott (MAhershala Ali) and his daughter Ruth (Myha’la Herrold), show up at the door, speaking of a massive blackout happening in New York.

Eventually, Amanda, Clay, and their children have to leave, planning to stop at Amanda’s sister’s house in New Jersey. G.H warns them that they will have to drive through New York City, where they can't be sure of the state of things. But they dismiss the warning and drive off in their Jeep Grand Cherokee. The blackout and the havoc it caused turn out to be the least of everyone’s problems.

But on the way to New Jersey, they run into what seems to be a traffic jam on the highway, the kind we have seen in so many apocalypse movies, with people trying to get away and save their lives. This time, though, it is not a traffic jam. There are dozens of Tesla Model 3 cars, all new, all crashed, and all abandoned there.

They realize there is something wrong and run back to their Jeep, in an attempt to speed off. But to make things even worse, in a Hitchock-kind of scene, Teslas, presumably on Autopilot, start gunning for them, as Amanda understands that they are the victims of a cyber attack with the Model 3s being remote-controlled. She pressed the accelerator, trying to get her family out of the way of the furious attack.

Sam Esmail, the creator of Mr. Robot, puts viewers through the intense moments of a self-driving Teslas going crazy and other transportation being hijacked. One of the moments of the action- and panic-packed trailer shows a massive cargo ship gunning for the beach, with onlookers finding it hard to believe that it is not going to stop in time. It is the moment that Amanda and Clay realize that transportation has been hijacked.
