Hendrick Motorsports' driver Jimmie Johnson has won the opening round of the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season at the Daytona International Speedway.
Clouded by the terrible accident that took place on Saturday evening, the Daytona 500 went on without notable events or crashes, but did eventually bring Danica Patrick in the spotlight, after she became the first female driver to lead a lap under green flag.
She eventually dropped on the grid and finished in eight place, while the Top 3 positions were occupied by Jimmie Johnson (Hendrick Motorsports), Dale Earnhardt Jr (Hendrick Motorsports), and Mark Martin (Michael Waltrip Racings).
Last year's reigning champion Brad Keselowski (Penske Racing) had to settle for a fourth place finish after suffering a mild crash during the race. Stewart-Haas Racing's Tony Stewart had to retire early in the event.
Sunday evening marked Jimmie Johnson's 61st career win in the series.
The next 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup race is scheduled to take place on March 3, at the Pheonix International Raceway in Avondale.
