It's been a while since the 2014 Jeep Cherokee was leaked, and consequently revealed by Chrysler, and we still think that the future Toledo-built crossover SUV looks like it's sucking lemons.
However, Jeep doesn't seem to care about our opinion, which is the right thing to do anyway, and plans on building no less than 250,000 Cherokee units each year. Quite ambitious given its controversial design and mixed opinions heard among Jeep enthusiasts.
In fact, Jeeps plans to build more Cherokees than Wranglers in its Toledo plant, although Chrysler dealers have been complaining about not getting enough JK platform-built SUVs. Of course, the new Cherokee is supposed to go global as well and might have some unexpected success on emerging markets.
"We are going to build almost half-a-million cars a year here in Toledo," Bruce Baumhower, president of Jeep's UAW Local 12 said. "We are going to do 220,000 with the Wrangler and we are going to do 250,000 on the Cherokee side."
In order for total assembly capacity to be increased to almost 500,000 units, Chrysler will reportedly hire 1,105 new workers for the Toledo factory.
