Jay Leno Takes Bob Lutz For a Spin in an Extended-Range Pick-Up

Jay Leno is the proud and happy owner of a Chevrolet Volt, a car developed and built under the supervision of (now retired) Bob Lutz, a very important figure for GM. However, despite retiring from his GM job, Lutz isn’t ‘out of the game’ yet, as he is one of the people behind VIA, a new company which converts GM trucks and SUVs to use a system similar to that of the aforementioned Volt.
One of VIA’s products is a converted GM pick-up which runs a 402 hp electric motor, drawing juice from a 24kWh battery pack (Lutz lied in the video, saying it was actually 30 kWh). However, when the batteries run out, the car is also equipped with a ‘small’ 4.6-liter V6 which charges the battery, as well as supplying power to run power tools or even run an entire house if the situation so requires.

The GM truck tested in the video is a ‘beta version’, but as Jay says, everything swiss-born Bob Lutz gets affiliated with ends up being successful, so the final version will be even better than this already competent model.
