Japan Car Production Drops

Even if Japanese manufacturer Toyota is already planning ahead and announced a target of 8 million cars in 2012, this doesn't mean that the Japanese automotive industry is feeling great. The numbers for November, for instance, show that in fact it doesn't.

The Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association published the production figures for last month, registering a 6.7 percent decline compared to the same month of last year. In November, Japan produced 802,009 units.

Automobile sales across the nation, excluding 660 cc minicars, went down 30.7 per cent in November, reaching 203,246 vehicles. Toyota sales fell 4.3 per cent, while Nissan Motor registered a decrease of 21.3 per cent. Honda too lost, posting a hefty 37.6 percent drop.

Things are even darker when it comes to the sale of automobiles. Local sales in November this year dropped to 323,600 vehicles, a number that is 25.9 percent lower compared with the same month of the previous year.

The November decrease in sales is not a surprise for the industry, as the Japanese market is not feeling the vibe other markets are feeling for quite some time. The November drop in the domestic market is the third consecutive month of year-on-year decrease.

The drop is attributed to the end of the government subsidy, which was offered to buyers of green cars. As it happened elsewhere in the world, leaving the market with no incentive meant that the interest for new cars dropped.

The industry is hoped to recover next year, as more and more car launches from local manufacturers are expected to bring customers back to dealerships.
