The launch of Jaguar's new 340 horsepower XE S sedan has somewhat been overshadowed by the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG GT. But once the dust settles and the fog of Anglo-Germanic war clears, Jaguar might have a cool product on its hands that it needs to expand into different niches.
In a recent interview with Australian magazine CarAdvice, the XE chief program engineer Nick Miller stated that a wagon and two-door coupe body are being considered. We shouldn't read too much into his statement though, since Jaguar as a company is known for playing the underdog game by hyping even the products it's not working on.
The XE has been designed as a direct rival to the BMW 3 Series sedan. And through his statement, Miller is actually saying Jaguar officials have admitted the existence of 4 Series and the 3 Series Gran Turismo, which might one day require a British answer.
We think a two-door XE is unlikely to be built for the next four years, two of which will be required for the launch of the XQ crossover and a revamped XF and XJ. Still, dreaming big is encouraged here at autoevolution, and what better way to do that than with a cool rendering by X-Tomi Design.
The renderings look a little bit like an Audi A5, in the sense that it shares too many design elements with the sedan. Perhaps this isn't a coincidence though. Jaguar isn't the most popular premium brand in its domestic market, that title actually belonging to the Ingolstadt company. As far as we know, Brits are the biggest buyers of Audi TTs in the world, so perhaps a bit of Audi design will do Jaguar good.
"Oh, but Jaguar already has that sexy new F-Type Coupe and the XK" we hear you say. Except having one too many coupes never stopped any of their German rivals. Mercedes, for instance, has the C, E, S, two four-door coupes (CLA and CLS), plus two hardtop convertibles. If you think about that, the Jag in this rendering should get priority over at least the XJ.
