Jaguar has registered the Q-Type and XQ names with the European Union trademark database, which means the British automaker could very well enter the popular SUV segment in the near future.
Although it’s a little early to point directions and name names, so to speak, rumor has it Jaguar might use the Range Rover Evoque’s platform to underpin an eventual crossover/SUV. In case a compact vehicle is to be developed, the British could build a new smaller architecture.
If the above speculation proves to be true, the new Jaguar vehicles are very likely to be powered by Land Rover’s smaller engines, such as the 2.0-liter four-cylinder and 3.0-liter V6 fitted in the Evoque, in both gasoline and diesel guises. In addition, the Q-Type and QX could get the upcoming “Hotfire” engines, which are scheduled to be developed in the new Wolverhampton factory, as well as a hybrid version.
Green-lighting these two models reportedly depends on the Chinese market, where the crossover/SUV segment is more than prosperous. In fact, China is expected to overtake the UK as Jaguar’s biggest market after surpassing the United States in the first quarter 2013.
