Jaguar Land Rover UK to Fire 198 Employees

Representatives of Jaguar Land Rover UK announced that 198 employees will leave the company by the end of November but denied that the dismissals are a result of the global economic crisis. The UK subsidiary of Jaguar Land Rover currently employs approximately 16,000 people but the decision only concerns the Merseyside, the Birmingham and the Solihull plants.

According to Autonews, the company's officials underlined that although multiple car manufacturers around the world reduced production and cut jobs due to economic crisis, Jaguar Land Rover only took this decision in order to raise the efficiency in the United Kingdom. Moreover, Don Hume, director of corporate affairs, explained that the Jaguar sales recorded an important increase in the first half 2008 and expect even higher sales in the last months.

"It is aimed at achieving greater efficiencies in the business. It is not a reaction to the economic slowdown or falling sales,” Hume commented on the decision. "Despite the downturn, we still expect this year to be the second most successful year in Land Rover's history.”

The European sales of Jaguar Land Rover were decreased by 17.2 percent (approximately 89,000 units) in the first nine months of 2008 according the aforementioned source quoting figures provided by ACEA. But even so, the car manufacturer expects to sell around 200,000 units this year, although most markets are heavily affected by the economic crisis.

Earlier this day, three motorcycle manufacturer companies, namely Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, announced that they will cut the production for the next year in several North American and European plants due to decreasing demand on these markets. Moreover, several other car makers already confirmed job cuts in several areas, including engineering and design centers.
