Jaguar Flywheel Hybrid System Explained

One of the latest developments in the automotive industry is the concept of a flywheel hybrid that has been tested by Jaguar and we are here now to present you the innovative mechanically-driven flywheel hybrid system, which includes a start-stop function.
The system, which is being developed by a consortium of British companies that includes names such as Prodrive and Xtrac, produces up to 82 hp of recovered energy using an integrated hybrid module.

More importantly, it promises to cut fuel consumption by 11.9 percent efficiency increase in the NEDS cycle (the industry-standard one). However, its developers claim that the current real-world driving is best represented by a new cycle called ARTEMIS, in which the hybrid should increase fuel efficiency by up to 22.4 percent.

The consortium explains that mechanical hybrids overcome many of the drawbacks of electric hybrids, as they avoid the inefficient energy conversion from kinetic to electrical to chemical and back, as well as eliminate the cost, weight, packaging and recycling issues of battery usage. The entire system, which has been tested on a research vehicle, weighs 80 kg.

The FHSPV engineering development vehicle recovers energy via the rear differential through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) into a high-speed flywheel. When the driver reapplies the accelerator, the CVT smoothly transfers the energy back to the wheels. The flywheel and its drive system are installed adjacent to the rear axle, in the space normally occupied by the spare wheel. The flywheel is constructed from carbon composite and operates in a partial vacuum, allowing it to spin at up to 60,000rpm. The CVT, which manages the flywheel’s speed and the flow of energy in each direction” a company statement reads, explaining how the system works.
