International Carmakers Support Vehicle Safety Improvements

The Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (AIAM) recently stressed the importance of automotive safety and outlined future directions in the field.

The AIAM showed both opportunities and challenges included in the draft legislation targeted at improving vehicle safety.

During a testimony before the House House Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, AIAM President and CEO Michael J. Stanton said the Association and its member companies support efforts to increase vehicle safety, addresses issues raised by the recent recall campaigns and bring new engineering resources to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Stanton warned that the NHTSA must be offered enough time and flexibility in order to be successful in analyzing safety problems, so that it can take analytic, data-based, technology-independent decisions.

"We are concerned that the rulemaking mandates in the draft bill pre-determine conclusions involving matters currently under active investigation by NHTSA or other Agencies and organizations with recognized expertise," said Stanton.  "It would be more appropriate to direct NHTSA to complete these investigations as soon as possible and issue rules based upon a full and comprehensive analysis of these important safety issues."

The AIAM is a trade association representing 15 key international automotive producers. The 15 carmakers account for 40 percent of all passenger cars and light trucks sold annually on the U.S. market. The Association offers information and analysis for its members, based on multiple legislative and regulatory issues that target the auto sector. The AIAM promotes free trade and policies that improve the level of vehicle safety.
