One of the exhibits shown at this year’s global forum for design "Design/Miami Basel" is the mobile pavilion that integrates seven tailgate doors from Audi TT sportscars. The doors are turned into futuristic entrances and the free-standing structure can be used to provide temporary shelter in isolated areas.
Designed by Konstantin Grcic, the TT pavilion is a pre-fabricated wood and aluminum installation presented by Audi at the design fare. The industrial designer - best known in the market for designing furniture such as the Parrish and Medici collections - was commissioned by the German manufacturer to create an architectural structure based on one of the automative brand’s models.
Gric explained why he chose Audi TT for his construction: “For me, the Audi TT is a car that you drive from the city out into the countryside. I respond to this experience with a pavilion concept that stand as a point of destination at a remote site.” The polygonal structure has tailgate doors from the new Audi TT coupe, that fold upwards to welcome visitors inside.
The TT Pavilion was designed as a house that can be installed anywhere and it’s raised off the ground on steel pylons allowing it to adapt to any terrain. According to Dezeen, the prefabricated houses of French architect Jean Prouve were Grcic’s inspiration.
Well, we don't know if we would ever tear apart an Audi TT to bult a pavilion, but considering the Germans are the exclusive automative sponsor of the global forum design, we get why they did it.
