Indian Taxi Drivers Forced to Display Photo ID

The Indian authorities have come up with a measure
meant to help the passengers of taxis in Mumbai know who is carrying them from place to place: all taxi drivers in the city will be forced to display a photo ID, together with additional information about him/her.

Indian authorities will require taxi drivers to stick on the back of the drivers' seats a recent photo ID, as well as their names, mobile numbers and residential address. The goal is, says the transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav, to eliminate rude behavior, excess fare or refusal to comply with the passenger's request.

"I have decided that there should be some kind of driver identification which will help passengers note down his name, number and other details in case of rude behaviour, excess fare or refusal to ply,” the commissioner was quoted as saying by India Times.

The Indian authorities have even set up a call center for all those passengers who feel they need to complain about something. They are asked to call 1800-22-0110. On the other hand, no measures to be taken against drivers who don't comply have been announced yet.

"We have begun the process of informing drivers outside railway stations to get their IDs prepared and stamped by an RTO,'' Jadhav added.

In addition, a refresher course for taxi and auto drivers will be soon introduced. Starting this September, drivers will be retrained “in batches.” The program will become mandatory for those applying for licenses and will include tips on road safety and... etiquette lessons.
