Incoming Mercedes AMG B-Klasse

When the revolutionary (as the manufacturer calls it) 2012 Mercedes Benz B-Klasse will arrive here, it will most likely receive an AMG boost, as the tuning arm of the German carmaker seems determined to take on the Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3 in the year of the launch.

The rumor, which surfaced on Pistonheads, is based on earlier reports which say AMG is indeed considering a performance version for the MFA platform, the one used for the construction of the A- and B-Klasse models.

According to Autonews, citing AMG new boss, Volker Mornhinweg, the AMG version of the B-Klasse will be purpose built to appeal to the younger buyers. Why ?

Well, currently the B-Klasse is the car of choice for retirees. According to the German carmaker's research, the average age for a B-Klasse driver is around 60 years of age...

The technical side of the future B-Klasse based AMG are far from being know at this point, but judging by its intended competitors, the output of the engine, whatever it may be, will likely stand in the 250 bhp range.

As for the regular B-Klasse, it promises to become a tough competitor in what Mercedes calls "this price-sensitive compact premium vehicle segment." From the engine standpoint, it promises to be one of the most diverse models on the market.

Aside for the regular petrol and diesel powerplants, the B will most likely get a hybrid version and a fuel cell powered one. Both are currently being tested by Daimler.
