In-Road EV Charging on the Go - On Its Way

The biggest hurdle faced by today’s EVs is the bulky batteries they have to carry around everywhere they go. Not only are batteries, even the most modern of them, extremely heavy, but also expensive to manufacture and relatively inefficient. Their inefficiency is not necessarily due to our technology, but to cost, as more efficient and compact batteries are significantly more expensive to produce and would not offer a viable alternative for electric vehicles.
The answer may lie with the charging system built into the road network, with electric cars being constantly charged as they drive along, using wireless transfer of electricity. This would make battery packs much smaller and it would enable the vehicle using this system to basically drive on forever. The technology to make this a reality isn’t far off, electricity has already been successfully transferred wirelessly over a distance of 25cm (10 inches) while the vehicle is stationary.

The next step is an attempt at charging on the go, if charging while not on the move proves completely successful, it will be just a matter of time before it’s applied on a wider scale. The first plan to make something like this work have been made by the University of Utah, where research in the field has been done for several years now. Their goal is to have a bus line within the campus, with the all-electric bus would get charged wirelessly at each end of the line.

It is only a matter of time before we start seeing this type of technology implemented in the real world as it is genuinely and properly awesome stuff and definitely a very good way for humans to evolve their transportation-related habits along with the EVs they drive.
