Hyundai is an automaker with the wind in its sails, but it needs to stay true to what the market wants if it’s to keep this up. Right now, its performance ambitions look a bit divided - on the one hand we have the new turbocharged ambitions which are helping the Veloster turbo along nicely and on the other, there’s the trust in their GDI tech.
The automaker is dipping its toe in both waters, with a SEMA concept version of the Genesis Coupe having been powered by a 5.0 V8, and on the other hand a 3.8-liter turbo having been tested, according to AutoGuide.
At a recent production preview at Hyundai Motor America’s technical center in Ann Arbor, MI, powertrain boss John Juriga admitted that a turbocharged version of the company’s 3.8-liter V6 is possible. “We’re looking for feedback from you folks,” he said.
The idea of a 5.0-liter Genesis Coupe might sound very appealing for something like a Ford Mustang rival, but the fact of the matter is a turbo V6 makes a lot more sense. Sister company Kia showed their GT Concept in Frankfurt back in September, and it was powered by a 3.3-liter turbo V6. We’re pretty sure the car is heading to production as the K9 flagship, and a turbo engine is a must if they are to take on the German saloon rivals.
