The Trail version of the 2014 Toyota 4Runner comes equipped with a multi-terrain selector which affects the power transmitted to the wheels in order to drive over difficult surfaces.
The system features four modes - mud and sand, loose rock, mogul or rock - each being displayed on the dashboard accessory meter. The features can be selected via the control knob mounted on the middle ceiling cluster, but each one will work only on a specific gear of the transfer case as following:
So, when you encounter rough terrain ahead, stop the vehicle, put the range selector in the correct gear, press the selector switch to turn the system on and then rotate it to select the desired driving setup.
- Mud and sand works in either H4 or L4 range
- Loose rock, mogul and rock works only in L4 range
