By this point, we’ve all heard of the new Line Lock feature that will be standard on all 2015 Ford Mustang GT models, but there’s still some time before we’ll be able to put this tire-shredding feature to good use. Until then, we have the digital version of the Mustang’s owner’s manual to peruse, which gives us step-by-step instruction on how to use Line Lock.
Line Lock is included as part of the Track Apps, which are controlled using the multifunction buttons found on the steering wheel. To initiate Line Lock, the Mustang GT must be on a level surface, with the engine running and travelling less than 25 mph. Also, the Drive Mode must not be in the wet mode and there can’t be any faults in the AdvanceTrac system.

After Line Lock is initiated, the driver can then engage the system by ensuring that the vehicle is stopped, parking brake is off, steering wheel is straight, driver’s door is closed and the transmission is in a forward gear. Once all of this is in place, all the driver has to do is hit the gas and start the smoky burnout. During the burnout, the driver has a countdown timer to display how much time until Line Lock automatically disengages. The driver can manually disengage by pressing the “OK” button on the steering wheel or by pressing the brake pedal.

Ideally, Line Lock helps racers at the drag strip by making burnouts even easier, which is done to heat the rear tires sufficiently before making a pass. We’re fairly confident, though, that plenty of public asphalt will get a similar treatment.
