With age, the water pump on your 2001 Toyota Corolla will start to wear out and you will need to replace it.
Doing so, requires some skill, as the water pump is located in a pretty tight space an you will also need to unmount a few parts off the engine. So if you don’t think you can handle it, visit a service. Else, grab your toolbox and buy a replacement water pump compatible with your model. Here’s how to do it:
Disconnect the battery terminal
Remove the engine plastic cover by unscrewing the two bolts
Take a 19 mm socket ratchet and loosen the accessory belt tensioner
Remove the accessory belt
Next, remove all cable connections from the alternator
Unscrew all the bolts fixing the alternator on the engine and remove it to have better access to the water pump
Remove the bolts from the water pump and take it out
Don’t forget to replace the water pump's sealing gasket
Put the new water pump in and screw it in place
Do the same with the alternator
Put the accessory belt back and tension it.
