The Scion tC's cabin air filter keeps away dust, pollen and other exterior contaminants from reaching the AC unit and entering the car.
And because its made out of some sort of paper, the cabin filter will clog up periodically and you will have to change it.

It’s a basic maintenance job which you can perform in about two minutes and all you need is a replacement filter and the following steps to guide you:
  • Open the glovebox
  • Locate the extending pivoting arm on the right that limits the glovebox tray’s movement downwards
  • Uncouple it by pulling it to the right
  • Pull the tray towards you to snap it from its upper limiters and let it hang downwards to facilitate access behind
  • Locate the white filter tray and pull it out
  • Remove the dusty old filter in the tray and put a new one in
  • Put everything back and give yourself a high-five for the good job
