Either if it malfunctioned or you just want to replace it with an aftermarket one, the radio unit on the 2005 Lexus RX 400 can be removed at home, using average garage tools.
All you have too worry about is not to damage those nice dashboard panels when taking them off. Tools of the trade - a ratchet with an extender and a nylon panel pry.
Here are the steps to unmount the whole thing:
Put the gear selector in reverse
Now pry the trimming surrounding the gear selector with the special tool and remove it
Do the same thing with the next upper part encasing the lighter and the buttons
Unscrew the bolts from the lower part of the radio unit and try not to drop them in the void bellow if you don’t have really skinny hands
Pull the audio unit forward and remove its cable connections
Perform the necessary repairs or get the new unit in place
The mounting operation follows the same steps, only backwards.
