The new BMW Navigation system allows you to avoid certain areas when giving you guidance. This comes in handy especially when you know there's road work going on or you just want to avoid your ex-girlfriend, for example.
In order to activate this feature you have to bring up the navigation menu in iDrive. Next select 'Route Preferences' on the menu on the left. Next scroll down to the 'Areas to Avoid' tab and select it.

You'll now see a new menu that allows you to add a new area to avoid. In order to mark it, you'll be brought back to the map of the area. Then you have to navigate the cursor to the center of the area you want to avoid.

When you're decided, press down on the iDrive controller to select. You will now be able to choose how big the avoided area should be, by rotating the controller. Once decided, just press down again, to confirm.

The selected area will now be named and you'll find it in the Areas to Avoid section of the iDrive menu, in order to activate and deactivate it easily.
