Passing the MOT test with a Toyota Prius shouldn’t be a problem, at least for the emission standards. You got to beat its engine way to much to fail.
However, there are other bits and pieces that may send you back home without the checkmark if you are not careful. So here are some easy tips not to screw up the MOT with your Prius and any other vehicle:
Check all the lights to work properly - headlights, turn signals, hazard lights, fog lights and braking lights. You might need a second person to help you test them quicker. Replace nonfunctional bulbs as needed.
Make sure your license plates are not damaged and the letters are visible. Wipe them with a clean piece of cloth if they are dirty. In fact, wash the whole vehicle so you won’t look like a peasant.
Check the tires for condition and thread depth. The minimum legal thread depth is 1,5mm but the recommended one is 3mm. Also, if your tire has chunks of rubber missing or bulges you should replace it immediately.
Clean the windshield and see if it has any cracks or chips. A crack bigger than 10mm within the swept area of the wiper is an MOT failure. Also, check the wiper blades for splits or other damage. Don’t forget to top up the windshield washer fluid.
Check the engine, braking and power steering oil in their respective containers. Make sure the levels are just OK, not too low and not over the MAX indicators.
Get inside and check for any warning lights on the dashboard when the vehicle is running. Also, make sure the seat belts work and are not damaged.
Do a quick drive and test the brakes. Make sure the car doesn’t make funny noises or pull to a side under braking.
