Researchers from UK-based Malloy Aeronautics have recently launched their Kickstarter campaign to develop a 1/3rd scale model drone of the actual Hoverbike they’ve been working on for years. The objective of this campaign is to help create a long term income stream that the engineers can use to continue development of the manned flying motorcycle.
The full scale model is in its final construction stages of the latest manned prototype of Hoverbike and in a few months will start its first flight tests. Meanwhile, the guys realized they need to create something that will back their financial efforts. The drone is as cool as the actual motorcycle will be and is able to do several things.

According to its designers, the drone was originally built as a proof of concept for our latest full-sized Hoverbike prototype, but after several tests, it turned out it could also be used as a drone. The flying vehicle is safe and versatile, and when coupled with a 3DR Pixhawk flight controller it can fly by itself on a pre-determined flight path, return to home, loiter, follow and more.

It weighs 4.8 lbs (2.2 kg), is 45,5 inches (1155 mm) long, 23.3 inches (590 mm) wide and 6.3 inches (160 mm) high and is able to carry up to 15.4 lbs (7 kg). Made out of carbon composite, aircraft grade aluminum and polyurethane, it reaches a maximum speed of 45 mph (72 km/h) and has a range of 14 minutes with no payload.

This drone also has an advantage over other consumer qudcopters in that it folds down to a more manageable 23.2 inches length (590 mm). You can even buy a purpose designed backpack from Malloy Aeronautics for transportation. Pledges for the fully functional drones start at $1,219 (EUR 905), with first shipping to start three to four months following the conclusion of a successful Kickstarter project.
