You can tell there are a lot of really old people with mobility problems in Japan. The issue is really clouding Honda’s engineering, because we really don’t get why they would ever create a “mobility concept device” such as this. It looks unstable, and we’d rather walk than ‘enjoy’ it.
It’s called the U3-X and it made its European debut at an exhibition entitled ‘Getting Around’, on show between April and August 2012 at the Museum of Architecture and Heritage (Cite De L’Architecture et du Patrimione), in Paris.
The contraption was first unveiled at the Tokyo Motorshow in 2009 and independently described as the ‘segway of unicycles’. But we think unicycles are only good for clowns and other entertainers.
Inspired by ASIMO's ability to find its own balance point, U3-X can stand upright by controlling its center of gravity. Has it ever seen a pothole? We don’t think so.
