The launch of the latest installment in the Gran Turismo franchise should be a reason for rejoicing, but this one might be the bringer of some really sad news.
Honda's so-called "baby NSX," a sports car slotting under the flagship model of the brand with similar design but a more affordable price tag, is likely never coming into this material world we call home. If experience is anything to go by, the Honda Sports Vision Gran Turismo, the digital vehicle's full name, is nothing more than a concept specifically conceived for the famous racing game.
Rumors of the entry-level sports car first appeared a little under a year ago when patent applications for a smaller vehicle resembling the NSX surfaced online. Honda also trademarked the ZSX name, giving everyone hope that the mysterious model would enter production at some point.
Time has passed, and no fresh information transpired - Honda did not comment, insiders did not leak, so it all fell silent. That could have meant two things: either the company was very careful about its project and wanted to keep it a big surprise, or there was nothing to talk about as it would never get past the patent phase.
It turns out a third option might have been the correct one after all, with Honda designing the ZSX for the Gran Turismo Sport video game. The sports car looks almost identical to the patent application, only with new wheels and a lot more detail. Overall, it is definitely a lot more aggressive.
At this point, we guess we're faced with a good news/bad news situation. The bad news is the "baby NSX" is likely never going to be built, and it's a crying shame considering it looks like it would have been a blast. Mid-engine, short wheelbase, lightweight - what more could you want?
The good news is that at least it's not a purely fictional concept and that we can still get to drive it in the game. That's a bit like comparing an actual marriage with one in The Sims, but we'll take what we're offered.
