The life of a highway patrolman can often be very difficult, and dangerous, especially when people don’t obey even the most basic of laws - the ones by which the safety of the other motorists depends. A state trooper from Maryland had an unfortunate contact with a moving truck which did not respect the necessary state laws in the given situation.
The trooper, David Avila, had pulled over a Hyundai Santa Fe, in an area of road where the shoulder was extremely narrow, and was forced to stand in the white line, while talking to the occupants of the SUV. However, the sound of large tires on the rumble strip (the one placed over the white line on which he was standing) announces the upcoming incident - a truck fails to stay within the lane and clips Avila.
He stumbles to the guardrail, only to collapse at the spot. He was taken to hospital and diagnosed with injuries to his shoulder, back and leg. The incident took place on June 14th, and reportedly, the patrolman is still under medical supervision. As for the truck driver who caused the unfortunate incident, he was identified and fined $100 for negligent driving, as well as not obeying the ‘move over law’ which dictates that whenever emergency vehicles are stopped on the hard shoulder, all vehicles must switch to the next lane away, in order to avoid just what happened here.
