After all the trials and tribulations with the Grand Theft Auto 6 leaks from September 2022, we're now at a milestone in video game history. Rockstar has announced the release date for the next GTA trailer, and sadly, it's not happening during Geoff Keighley's The Game Awards ceremony on December 7. It would have been a superb swan song for 2023, but we take what we can get. And in this case, we're getting something extraordinary.
At the time of writing, barely half an hour had passed since the announcement, and the Twitter/X post had amassed over 8.4 million views. This is nothing surprising, as the original trailer announcement from November 8 is keeping steady at around 183 million views.
There's nothing in the entertainment industry to even come close to this level of hype and interest by people around every corner of the world.
Now, let's stop beating around the bush and get down to brass tacks. Why is it called "Trailer 1" and will there be six of them? Well, only Rockstar knows, so we'll skip to the next question. When is it coming? That depends on where you live.
If you're from the grand old United States, Rockstar's X post says 9 AM ET (Eastern Time Zone), which means 6 AM PST (Pacific Standard Time), 7 AM MST (Mountain Standard Time), and 8 AM CST (Central Standard Time).
If you hail from Europe, that should mean 3 PM CET (Central European Time) and 4 PM EET (Eastern European Time). If you're expecting the GTA 6 trailer from "Jolly Old England," then it should be live at 2 PM GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) or 3PM BST (British Summer Time).
If you're from Asia or Oceania, you'll have to wait for the clock to strike 11 PM JST (Japan Standard Time), 10 PM AWST (Australian Western Standard Time), or 1 AM AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Time).
My calculations and math skills aren't the most advanced in the world, so to be 100% sure, use dear old Google, just in case.
If not for the massive Rockstar hack and leaks from 2022, we would have been excited for an indirect confirmation that "Six," as Ned Luke calls it, takes place in the Miami-inspired Vice City. This is obvious in the image from the post.
Sadly, this surprise has been stolen from fans, given that over 100 videos and images from development were posted on the Internet in September. Since then, Rockstar has done all it could to eliminate the leaks, but in today's world, that's impossible.
In 2023, Take-Two Interactive Software disclosed how much money the Grand Theft Auto franchise has brought in since GTA 5 launched in September 2013.
Over 8.33 billion US dollars; this is how much a behemoth like GTA makes. GTA 5 sales combined with GTA Online revenue, and more recently, the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, earn over $700 million annually. In 2022, it even surpassed a billion dollars.
GTA Online is still stronger than ever, but most interestingly, GTA has made its way onto the Netflix Games mobile platform at no additional cost for Netflix subscribers.
This means Rockstar is more flexible than it led us to believe so far. They're not exactly known for sharing the Grand Theft Auto IP with the world. But at the end of the day, we're talking serious cash, and it's a business, not charity.
