Porsche says the Macan EV marks the debut of the small SUV's second generation, even though it has been on the market for almost 10 years. It went through two facelifts, though! Now, it's time to get acquainted with the latest edition. Buckle up! We're going to act like the Federal Reserve and pretend money is no object.
First things first, the 2024 Porsche Macan EV is available in two versions at launch – 4 and Turbo. Both are all-wheel-drive and have the same 100-kWh high-voltage battery with the 800V architecture. That last bit enables a top battery replenishing rate of 270 kW. Fast charging from 10 to 80% at the right DC dispenser should take around 20 minutes.

In true Porsche fashion, customers will have extra equipment to choose from even when they go for the pricey 630-hp Macan EV Turbo. That's what we did!

To create the most expensive Macan EV yet we started with the exterior color. The costly paint-to-sample option was not available when writing, so we had three options: Oak Green Metallic Neo, Copper Ruby Metallic, and Aventurine Green Metallic.

The first one seemed to fit the eSUV's ethos, so we went with it. Granted, it could've been a tad bit more daring and lighter. However, we can't really complain. Green is already a rare paint, according to German chemical giant BASF. It analyzed last year's automotive colors and realized that most new car buyers nowadays go for grey or silver.

We could have also chosen Papaya Metallic at no extra charge, which would have made this zero-emission machine with a top speed of 161 mph and 833 lb-ft of torque look bolder and more interesting. It would have also proven that we know fashion. Peach Fuzz is Pantone's color of the year 2024.

Sticking with our gut

But Oak Green Metallic Neo gives us a good-looking EV here, which is not totally unexpected considering the $105,300 MSRP, the delivery charge of $1,650, and the $2,490 paint job.

Next, we picked the following extras:
  • 22-inch wheels with aero blades in carbon fiber (horrible choice for those looking for ride comfort and maximized range);
  • Club leather interior in truffle brown with neodyme (gold) accents;
  • Four-zone climate control, heated rear seats, and massaging and ventilated front seats (part of the premium package);
  • Off-road design package and the side blade in the exterior color;
  • Mirror housing finished in carbon fiber.

Then, we had to ponder adding some audio-visual enhancements. We went with the door-entry puddle lights, the power charge port cover, the door handles finished in gloss black, the Porsche Electric Sport Sound suite, the high-gloss black brake calipers, the matrix headlights in black with PDLS+, the clear taillights with Porsche logo in black, and the thermally and noise-insulated glass (that blocked us from getting a rear wiper).

Be advised that while the configurator is online, you may experience some glitches. At one point, the platform refused to show us prices and some options. So, take your time.

Building the ideal Macan Turbo EV continued with ticking even more option boxes. That was fun! We didn't leave anything behind. Here's the list of add-ons that may be unnecessary in real life but very useful for our purpose of creating the most expensive 2024 Macan Turbo EV:
  • Trailer hitch without tow ball;
  • Sport Chrono Pack with Porsche Design Subsecond Clock;
  • Rear-axle steering;
  • Heated GT sport steering wheel with race-tex and carbon fiber;
  • Bespoke vehicle keys;
  • Carbon fiber door sills;
  • Porsche crest on the center console;
  • Fixed luggage compartment cover in leather;
  • Bespoke floor mats with leather edging;
  • Fire extinguisher;
  • Owner's manual in carbon fiber with a magnetic catch;
  • Porsche InnoDrive;
  • Head-up display with augmented reality;
  • A/C ionizer;
  • Power sunblinds for rear-side windows;
  • Bespoke reversible cargo mat;
  • Passenger display;
  • Burmester high-end surround sound system.

We would have added the personalized seat badge that goes right under the headrest. Unfortunately, it would have meant giving up on massaging comfort seats and accepting a final price that was $10 cheaper. That would've gone against our goal.

All in all, our build came out to a total of nearly $153,000, with freight included. Only $90 separated us from touching that beautiful, rounded number. Add a California-style sales tax, and the out-the-door price should be somewhere around $164,378.

One tricky future

I'll be the first to say that it's too much. No matter how many Porsche crests or personalized mats we may have added, $164,000 buys you two brand-new Tesla Model X Long Range SUVs and leaves you with a few thousand to spare. The falcon-winged EV qualifies for the updated EV tax credit, too.

But Porsche is not concerned about federal incentives or low prices. Its target audience has a net worth of $400,000 minimum. It won't bother with discounts, even if the all-new Macan looks a tad bit too much like the Genesis GV60.

The Macan Turbo EV could become the reference EV for well-off people who live near a city and commute or for those who want a versatile zero-emission ride. We don't expect to see many people tracking it or going off-road, but it will certainly be a cute eSUV that will pop up in the most affluent areas worldwide.

The problem is that I can't shake off the price. If a fully loaded Macan Turbo EV costs $153,000, what prices will the all-electric Cayenne Turbo and the upcoming three-row Porsche have? It's not looking good for anyone. The anomaly we had two years ago is gone. Cars are once again depreciating assets.

We're certainly in for a very curious ride to... Somewhere! Let's wait and see if it works out for everyone involved in this beautiful car world of ours.
