A full 60 years have now passed since Toyota revealed the first generation BJ on August 1st, 1951. Over six decades, the design has changed and evolved to stay relevant, but the core value of all-wheel drive excellence has not changed at all. Just read our recent test drive with the current generation if you don’t believe us!
Originally envisioned as a military vehicle, the Land Cruiser soon gained a reputation for reliability and capability. It’s managed to take on the Arctic and the Antarctic, crossed deserts and rain forests and provide aid in some of the most remote places on the planet.
To remind us just how good their idea of a Jeep is, Toyota has just launch a celebratory video, showing us the rich heritage of the vehicle and reminding us of its overwhelming market success - over 6 million sold to customers in 190 countries across the world.
Now for a bit of a history lesson! The first generation was based on the SB-type truck chassis. In 1955, it got the generic name ‘Land Cruiser’, a name that would soon be know across the wold. Originally created as a Heavy Duty vehicle, two additional body types were introduced to cater for different customer needs. In 1966 Toyota launched the FJ55, the first Station Wagon type model, while in 1984 the Japanese carmaker brought the Light version.
“The launch of the current Land Cruiser raised the bar even higher in the fields of quality, durability and refinement, for which the model remains respected throughout the world,” Toyota brags in the an official statement. “Today Toyota proudly celebrates the 60th birthday of its iconic Land Cruiser model and also looks confidently ahead to offer further unique innovations in the future.”
