Hamilton Believes Webber Could Retire in 2010

As if the Kimi Raikkonen-Red Bull Racing-Mark Webber wasn't complicated enough, with the Finn rumored to take Webber's place at the Milton Keynes team in 2011, 2008 F1 champion Lewis Hamilton admitted that he has the feeling this will be the Australian racer's final year in the series.

Mark Webber's contract with the Austrian outfit runs out at the end of this season, and it was widely rumored that Kimi Raikkonen will be the man to replace the Aussie next year. The Finn is currently competing in the WRC on a Red Bull-backed programme with Citroen, and is set to make his decision about a potential comeback in F1 this summer.

I don't know how long he plans to stay in Formula One but I get the sense that it's one of the years he wants to finish on top and perhaps call it a day. He has the best chance to end on that high this year and I wouldn't be surprised if he is considering it,” said Hamilton, according to the AAP news agency.

Webber was one of the first drivers to secure his 2010 deal last year, when Red Bull agreed to a one-year extension to his contract following his win at the Nurburgring. He eventually finished last season in 4th place, but scoring his first 2 wins in career.

This year, the Australian admitted he is not very well-placed in the title fight – with 4 world champions and highly-ranked teammate Sebastian Vettel well ahead of him – but reckoned this position will favor him throughout the season. He certainly has the car to do it, as the RB6 is currently considered the strongest single-seater in the series.

The 33-year old New South Wales native is currently contesting in his 9th consecutive Formula One season, having so far started 145 races, scored 169.5 points, one pole position, 2 wins and 10 podiums.
