Marketing department hiccup or a cleverly devised strategy? No one will be able to tell, ever, but it would appear the countless launch delays of the latest installment of the Gran Turismo franchise was well worth the wait, both for the creators of the game and for the crowds.
Sony announced this week that in 12 days since the release of the Playstation 3 exclusive title, 5.5 million copies left the shelves. By December 6, the volume of the entire franchise, introduced nearly 13 years ago, reached over 60 million copies, making Gran Turismo one of the most successful games ever for Sony.
The Gran Turismo 5, with its new physics engine, brings to life and under your control in excess of 1,000 licensed karts and cars produced around the world. Stereoscopic 3D support, real-time car damage, dynamic weather effects, kart racing, a Course Maker, and online and community feature make the game one of the most appealing racing titles on the market today.
We are able to race the 1,000+ cars on 35 courses designed in more than 60 layouts, while the Ad hoc multiplayer races and trading or sharing cars, enables players to explore a new range of communication methods.
And, truth be told, we could have expected nothing but success from the game, despite the malicious words we threw at Sony and Polyphony in the past. After all, Kazunori Yamauchi has pretty much dedicated his life to the franchise.
“Gran Turismo might just have become my life. Making Gran Turismo is a lot of fun, really, though maybe I’ve missed out on a lot of things by working so hard on Gran Turismo,” he said a while back.
