Google's automotive strategy comes down to software and services because, unlike long-time rival Apple, the search giant has never been interested in building a vehicle from scratch.
Android Auto, Android Automotive, and Google Automotive Services spearhead the push, with Google now fully committed to improving all these products.

The upcoming I/O developer event will witness new announcements for Android Auto and Android Automotive, with Google confirming that it'll hold a dedicated session for in-car experiences. The company confirmed this session will "highlight Google's commitment to automotive."

However, the more interesting tidbit is that the search giant wants to describe how it paves the way for developers to "bring new experiences to the car, including multi-display and casting." The company doesn't elaborate on this promise, but Google says it wants to help developers bring their apps to Android Auto and Android Automotive.

Vivek Radhakrishnan, Technical Program Manager, Android Auto Developer Platforms, and Seung Nam, Product Manager, Android Automotive OS, will take the stage to discuss how Google plans to help developers bring more apps to the car.

Google has been working hard to improve its car offering, and the last few months have brought major updates to certain apps, including Google Maps on Android Automotive.

The navigation app already offers a more advanced experience in cars with Google built-in, as it can read vehicle data, like the battery level and range. However, thanks to these latest updates, Google Maps on Android Automotive can automatically look for charging stations in proximity and suggest a stop when you run out of battery. Google Maps offers a more integrated experience, and Google wants the app to provide more straightforward navigation to charging stations based on data extracted from user reviews.

Google Maps on Android Auto also evolves, with Google adding features that have been around for some time on Android devices. For example, Google Maps on Android Auto now displays the parking location on the map, allowing users to run the app for walking directions to a configured address. The feature was previously exclusive to mobile devices, but thanks to Android Auto integration, users can use Google Maps to navigate to an address, find a parking place close to the destination, and receive step-by-step directions from the parking location.

Google could use the upcoming I/O event to unlock new app categories on Android Auto and Android Auto. I already know what most people think, as the upcoming developer event will be the perfect moment for Google to unlock YouTube on Android Auto and allow the app when the vehicle is parked. YouTube is already available on Android Automotive, allowing users to watch videos when the car is not in motion. However, the app is still blocked on Android Auto, forcing users to turn to third-party solutions to unlock YouTube behind the wheel.
