General Motors has announced plans to invest $331.8 million to build two new engines and a range of efficient transmission by 2016.
The new investments will go into four plants, but the biggest chunk (about $215 million) will be dirrected towards the Flint Engine Operations in Michigan, where a new Ecotec engine will be designed and built. The rest will go at Toledo Transmission Operations in Ohio ($55.7M), Bay City Powertrain in Chicago ($31.7M) and Bedford Castings in Indiana ($29.4M). In addition, GM is also increasing its investments at the plants in Romulus and Saginaw by $46 million.
The Detroit-based automaker declined to provide any info on the new units, but we do know that the mystery engines will in fact be a new highly-efficient V6 and four-cylinder Ecotec powerplant. A new eight-speed automatic transmission is also in the books.
"We are investing in technologies and manufacturing capabilities that produce high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles and components for our customers,” said Diana Tremblay, vice president of GM North American Manufacturing. “Today’s announcement demonstrates GM’s commitment to growing the business and strengthening the plant communities where we receive so much support."
The investment will retain around 1,650 jobs at the above-mentioned facilities, the company added.
