As we told you earlier today, sources with a closer insight on GM’s future plans claimed that the American manufacturer is planning the closure of most of its US based plants sometimes this summer, for periods of up to nine weeks. When the news broke, nothing was known about which plants or in what periods of time will they be closed.
A confirmation of that initial rumor came this afternoon, when a source inside GM’s Hamtramck plant confirmed that the facility will be shut down for six weeks this summer. GM stood by its initial position and said it would rather let its employees know what’s happening before making the news public.
"We have nothing to announce at this time of the day, and we always tell our people first. When that is completed, we'll be able to go public with our information," Susan Waun, GM spokeswoman told Autonews.
George McGregor, vice president of Local 22, said that GM told Hamtramck workers that most likely the plant will shut down its operations on May 29, with scheduled restart date set on July 13.
"Members knew something was coming because of the 35 jobs an hour, and we can look out the back of our plant and see most of the cars are still there," McGregor said. "At least we're only getting six weeks down. I think GM is going to announce some people get nine weeks down."
GM officials declined to comment on the news itself, but they did mention that the company might post the planned shutdowns on its website sometimes today. We will come back with more information on the subject as the events unfold.
