GM Recalls 2,000 Vehicles For Fire Hazard in Korea

Earlier this month, General Motors announced a recall campaign that included 1.5 million vehicles worldwide. The call back was generated by a heated washer fluid system that could catch fire due to manufacturing defect. The company said that it would fix the issue free of cost and offer $100 to each owner/lessee of the cars because the feature would be disabled.

Now GM, together with its South Korean arm GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co, announced they will recall over 2,000 vehicles in Korea due to the same problem.

According to the country’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the recall affects a total of 2,154 cars produced between 2005 and 2008, with the campaign scheduled to debut today.

The recall includes 1,314 Gm Daewoo Veritas sedans that were produced in Korea as well as imported Cadillac CTS, DTS and Escalade models.

As part of the recall announcement made earlier this month, GM explained that it will replace the washer fluid system module and reroute the washer fluid hoses. The company added that the technology used for the heated module was only offered by one supplier that had ceased production, thus forcing the U.S. automaker to disable the feature on the recalled vehicles. GM stressed the fact that the $100 voluntary payment will be received as a compensation for the disabling of the aforementioned feature, not for the recall action.

When GM announced the mammoth recall, it mentioned that it has only been aware of five fires related to the condition, with no injuries or crashes related to the problem.
