Toyota Recalls Lexus HS 250h Hybrids Over Fuel Leak Problems

Things are going from bad to worse for the Japanese giant Toyota, as the company today announced a voluntary safety recall concerning around 17,000 Lexus HS 250h models. Following the safety tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), it has emerged that certain vehicles included in the HS 250h range might be affected by a potential fuel leakage problem that could obviously lead to fires.

The issue was spotted in the rear-impact tests, after the HS 250h got hit from the rear at a speed of 50 mph, with the amount of leaked fuel exceeding the imposed limits, according to an NHTSA statement.

Although the Japanese manufacturer doesn't know yet how to fix the problem, it has already announced a new recall for certain 2010 models, with affected owners to be contacted in the near future. Until Toyota starts the recall, a date which is yet to be decided, dealers across the USA will suspend sales of the hybrid.

“We want to assure our customers that their safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. We take the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) test results very seriously and appreciate the NHTSA bringing its concerns to our attention. Our engineers conducted similar testing during the development of the new HS 250h and the vehicle performed safely. While we are investigating and vigorously working to understand the different test results, we have stopped delivery of the involved vehicles. As soon as the issue is better understood and/or a remedy is developed, we will contact every owner,” Toyota said in a statement today, while confirming that a fix is yet to be found.

As always, Lexus 250h owners are encouraged to contact the closest Lexus dealer or call Lexus Customer Satisfaction at 1-800-25LEXUS or 1-800-255-3987.
