GM Presents CNG-Powered Vans at Green Fleet Conference

American manufacturer GM will bring to the Green Fleet Conference in San Diego its newest compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles aimed at fleet operators, namely the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana CNG vans.

This is the first time GM will be presenting to the public the vehicles powered by the alternative fuel. The carmaker announced the pricing for the models in the beginning of September, when it said the two vans will cost $41,890 ($15,910 is the price for the CNG system alone).

“Our compressed natural gas cargo vans will make it easier for fleet owners to meet their business objectives and make their transportation more sustainable,” said Mary Beth Stanek, GM’s director of federal environmental and energy regulatory affairs.

“Chevrolet and GMC are the only brands to offer a one-source CNG option on vans for fleet customers. What’s more, these vans meet all Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board emission certification requirements.”

Both vans offered with CNG option are powered by the Vortec 6.0L V8 engine, modified to accommodate hardened exhaust valves and intake and exhaust valve seats. The CNG option, integrated into the vans by Productive Concepts (PCI), are EPA and CARB compliant.

Aside from the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana, GM will bring to the Green Fleet Conference flex-fuel and hybrid vehicles. In other words, the entire lineup of vehicles which allowed it to achieve a 39 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions (emissions from facilities included).

“Natural gas is an abundant and clean alternative fuel,”
Stanek added. “Based on today’s CNG fuel rates and anticipated payback period, fleet investment in CNG can be quite affordable.”
